This plaster cast dog circa 1950's is "Nipper", the famous tradmark dog listening inquisitively to "his master's voice" coming through a gramophone. Nipper is based on the painting by English artist Francis Barraud, who sold it to the Gramophone Company, now EMI, who began using it as a trademark in 1909. The Victor Talking Machine began using it as a trademark in 1902.
"If Nipper only knew that, he would wag his little stumpy tail so proudly. He did not know he was going to be handed down to posterity. No more did I. Nipper bids fair to go on listening into the ages."
- Francis Barraud, The Strand, 1916. |
